Golf Memorabilia: How to Display It

June 17th, 2012 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Collecting golf memorabilia can be fun and with the internet, fairly easy. There are several different ways to display various pieces of golf memorabilia.

Trading Cards

Cards are smaller items and while they may not make for the best displays, there are ways you can make them easy for viewing. The most common way to display cards is by using three-ring binders and nine-card plastic sheets. Binders are an easy way to display hundreds of cards at a time.

Photographs

Framing photographs is obviously the best way to display them. A frame with a colorful mat can make for an excellent display. Framing with UV coated glass is best when possible – especially when dealing with autographed photos. If photographs are placed in inexpensive frames, signatures can fade over time due to light. If you have several photographs and framing is too expensive an option, they can also be kept in clear plastic sleeves in three-ring binders (assuming they are no larger than 8X10 in size), which allows them to be viewed like a photo album.

Golf Balls

There probably is no better way to display a collection of golf balls than in a hanging wood display case. These cases hang on the wall and depending on the size, can hold up to several dozen at a time. Some even have the tops of tees that are used to hold the balls, adding to the allure of the display. Fans can collect unused logo balls from different courses, balls used by golfers in tournaments, or even autographed golf balls. The display works just as well no matter what type you choose to display and the case looks perfect in an office or game room.

Tournament Used Clothing

Clothing used in tournaments is becoming more popular to collect. Shirts, hats, and gloves worn by golfers are a poplar collectible and with few options for displaying them, shadowboxes are quickly becoming the display of choice. Shadowboxes come in different sizes and can be perfect for golf shirts or even gloves or hats if the right size can be found. A shadowbox is hung on a wall and unlike a picture frame, leaves space in between the item and the glass. These are perfect for three dimensional items that aren’t flat.

Golf Clubs

Golf clubs used by players in tournaments are hard to come by. But a limited amount can be made available in auctions or from sports memorabilia dealers. If you’re fortunate enough to own a set of clubs used by a golfer, there aren’t many display options. But one of the best is a golf bag stand or organizer. This is a display that allows a bag of clubs to be stored and kept off the ground. You can even purchase one that has shelves for things like balls or gloves and these can be perfect for displaying an entire collection of tournament used items.

For a home or office, knowing how to display golf memorabilia is just as important as the purchase itself.  Click here to see golf display cases on Amazon.com.

Collecting Masters Golf Memorabilia

May 26th, 2012 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

The Masters is the most famous and prestigious golf tournament in the United States, or even the world. For this reason, items from Masters tournaments past and present are widely collected and desired by fans. Here are a few of the most popular types of Masters golf memorabilia that can be easily collected.

Programs – Programs are one of the easiest things to collect from any event and the Masters is no exception. Newer ones are fairly inexpensive and a program is a good way to research the players in the tournament in a given year. Older programs, of course, can sell for significantly more money.

Masters Badges – Like programs, ticket stubs to the event are another great way to remember you were there. Masters badges, however, are very hard to find and expensive.  Limited in number, obviously, anyone accumulating a large collection has something of value.

Tournament-Used Items – As with other tournaments, any kind of event-used items are desired by fans. Many golfers may give away items such as balls, gloves, or hats used from the tournament at the end of the weekend, tossing them into the gallery or giving them away to fans after their final hole.

Photographs – Photographs are popular collectibles for any big-time event and the Masters is no exception. Some fans prefer to collect photos of the course, while others prefer action shots of the golfers. These obviously look great when framed or matted. And if you’re looking for autographs at the event, photos are perhaps the best item to have as you can store more than 100 in a standard three-ring binder with plastic sleeves. In either event, whether you’re collecting pictures of the players or the course, if you’re fortunate enough to attend a Masters Tournament, be sure to take plenty of your own photographs. The official site of the Masters sells photographs at a premium – approximately $35.00 for an 8X10 size.

Prints and Posters – Prints and posters of the famous Augusta course are also available from the Masters’ official website (www.masters.com). Unlike photos, these cannot be stored and made easy for viewing. They are more expensive and need to be framed to be truly appreciated, but when displayed properly, they are generally much nicer than a photograph.

Novelty Items – All kinds of Masters memorabilia is available either at the tournament or through other websites. Anything from pens, pennants, books, pins, hats, shirts, patches, yearbooks, and more can be purchased as well.

Five Cool Vintage Golf Card Collectibles

February 9th, 2012 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Today you can find a large variety of golf sets that are produced each year. But it wasn’t always that way. Golf cards used to be scarce and not widely collected. There weren’t very many steady brands that produced sets of golf cards year after year.

Still, even though variety wasn’t widespread in older cards, there are plenty of great older cards to collect. Here’s a look at five of them in no particular order.
1.    1981 Donruss PGA card set – This may be the oldest mainstream card set that was widely distributed. It was not only made by a manufacturer, but these may be the first cards ever licensed by the PGA that were readily available for collectors.

While Donruss had a limited number of entertainment and racing cards produced before 1981, that year was the first in which they really made their mark. They began producing baseball cards that season and also delved into the golf trading card market, which really was untapped. There may be older cards for some of the stars in the set, which include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange, Fred Couples, and Lee Trevino among others, but these are considered to be the first mainstream rookie cards of most in the set.

2.    John F. Kennedy 1964 Topps card #15 – This card was part of a set produced by Topps depicting the former President in a variety of places. Card #15 featured Kennedy playing golf – one of his favorite hobbies. The card isn’t valued all that highly, but is a pretty cool card. One of the great things about it is that it was licensed by Topps, which didn’t produce much in the way of older golf cards.

3.    Jack Nicklaus 1971 Barratt & Co. Rookie Card – While Nicklaus’ first mainstream card appeared in the 1981 Donruss set, this 1971 card is believed to be his first. The miniature card which is approximately 1 ½” x 2 ½” features a young Nicklaus taking a swing. The card was produced in England and can generally be purchased for a few hundred dollars.

4.    Arnold Palmer 1990 Pro Set Hologram Promo Card – This card was produced as a test card by Pro Set, a manufacturer that produced several sports trading cards including golf. This card not only features one of the game’s all-time greats, but it may be the first golf hologram card ever produced.

5.    Babe Didrikson Zaharias 1960 Texas Golf Hall of Fame Postcard – Before Annika Sorenstam or Michelle Wie, there was Babe Didrikson Zaharias. But unlike Sorenstam or Wie, Zaharias wasn’t only a golfer. She was a track and field star, baseball player, and basketball player as well. Because Zaharias played golf in the 1940s and 1950s, there aren’t many trading cards for her. But this special postcard features a wax likeness of the former star in a Dallas museum. A rare card of a legendary athlete.

Tiger Woods Memorabilia: Good Time to Buy?

February 4th, 2012 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Is 2012 the right time to get back on the Tiger collectible bandwagon?  Autograph prices have been down since his marital issues surfaced a couple of years ago and the same goes for his rookie cards (2001 Upper Deck) since he hasn't been winning.  They made a slight move recently, but for many collectors, especially those within the game of golf, 2012 may be one of the best opportunities to buy Tiger Woods memorabilia, for two main reasons.

Back Competing and Fully Healthy

The most important reason is that Woods is back competing and is fully healthy once again.Woods struggled for much of 2011 due to a severe leg injury along with the recurring saga involving his past infidelities. Many analysts within the sport were even skeptical that he could come back competing in top form.It is because of this off-year that his prices have dipped somewhat, providing a great opportunity for collectors.

However, Tiger has shown since the end of 2011 that he is now fully healthy and has put everything in the past.Starting with the Australian Open near the end of last year, Woods has been continuously improving his golf game, and won the 2011 Chevron Challenge in late November. In his first event of 2012, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Tiger nearly won the event, finishing in third place. The fact that he is back competing at a high level and is fully healthy should be a good sign for collectors who want to take advantage of the lower prices being offered before they go back up.

The 18 Major Mark

The number 18 holds a special significance within the realm of professional golf, as it is Jack Nicklaus’ major record. It is considered by many as the greatest accomplishment in golf, and anyone who can top it will most likely be considered as one of, if not the, greatest golfers of all time.Tiger currently has 14 majors, and needs only 5 more to break his record. What is great about the game of golf as opposed to other sports is that golfers can play competitively well into their 40’s and 50’s, and at 36 Woods still has well over a decade to try to beat Nicklaus’ record. If and when he does break the record, one should expect prices to jump, providing another reason why it is a good time for collectors to start buying Tiger Woods memorabilia once again. Golf Photos: A Collector’s Guide

February 2nd, 2012 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Several different golf photographs are available to collectors. Here are a few things to consider:

Size

Several different sizes of photographs are available. While there are virtually an unlimited number of sizes one can collect, there are a few standard sizes. The most common sizes of golf photos are 8X10, 11X14, or 16X20. These are the sizes you’re most likely to find when viewing online auctions or buying from a sports memorabilia or golf dealer. One of the main reasons for these standardized sizes is to allow the collector to easily frame the photos. Frames are readily available in these sizes and allow the photos to be displayed without the need for custom framing.

With the advancement in digital cameras, it’s also easy to take your own photographs and have them blown up to the desired size, assuming you’re close enough to the action. Several collectors have taken advantage of this option as photographs (especially officially licensed ones or larger versions) can be quite costly.

Framing

As discussed above, framing can be a significant expense. Standard size frames can be easily purchased from any number of retail or big box stores, but what do you do with that odd-shaped 13X20 photograph? Two main options exist.

First, if you have the funds you can take the item to a professional framing shop for custom matting and framing. This can be as expensive as it sounds, sometimes costing hundreds of dollars depending on the frame and glass used.

If custom framing isn’t an option a less expensive option is to take the photograph to a framing store and have a mat cut. You can have a mat cut to any size to fit a standard size frame. For example, for a 13X20 photograph, you could have a mat cut with an opening for your photo with the mat fitting an 18X24 frame. 18X24 frames are fairly common and you could purchase one at many different stores.

Autographed Photos

If autographs are your thing, the best item to use to obtain a signature is usually a Sharpie marker. Blue, black, gold, or silver are usually the most popular colors and usually your best bet when having a photograph signed. Pens can sometimes be used on non-glossy items, but they can be more difficult to see.

The best place to have your golf photographs signed in person is after a player’s round. The player is more relaxed then and many golfers will take their time to sign for fans. Practice rounds are also a good opportunity to have your item signed.

If you’re unable to get to a golf tournament, online sources such as memorabilia stores or eBay almost always have a wide variety of autographed golf items.

You can find hundreds of golf photos of all kinds on eBay for very reasonable prices.

Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones Memorabilia Attract Collectors

November 20th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Bobby Jones’ golf medals and Walter Hagen’s 1925 PGA Championship were among many legendary collectibles at Heritage’s Vintage Sports Signature Auction on November 11th this year.A stunning collection of rare and historic golf memorabilia, much of if hailing from the Philadelphia Private Golf Collection, garnered high bids along with other memorabilia, totaling $5.3 million.

The auction featured a quartet of early Bobby Jones amateur medals including his 1919 Southern Golf Association Open Runner-Up Silver Medal, one of the earliest pieces of Jones memorabilia ever made available to the public, and Walter Hagen’s 1925 PGA Championship Medal.

“This is the finest selection of treasures from golf Hall Of Famers ever offered to the public,” said Mike Gutierrez of Heritage. “It’s especially heavy with pieces connected to the great Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen, probably the best loved players of the early 20th Century.”

The four Bobby Jones Amateur Golf Medals in the auction, all of which originate from his estate, include the above-mentioned 1919 Southern Golf Association Open Runner-Up Silver Medal, which was won from a tournament the 17 year-old Jones finished second in by a single stroke to professional Jim Barnes, a PGA and U.S. Open Champion. The other three consist of Bobby Jones’s 1920 Western Golf Association Amateur Medal, reading “1920 Semi-Finalist Won by Robert T. Jones Jr.,” his 1921 Western Golf Association Open Silver Fourth Place Medal, reading “1921 Fourth Place Won by Robert T. Jones, Jr.” and his 1922 Southern Golf Association Team Amateur Medal, reading “Member of Winning Team, Amateur Championship Event, June 1922, Won by Robert T. Jones Jr.”

Bobby Jones’ four early winner’s medals for the event, each surpassed a price realized of $20,000, including a $33,460 price realized for Jones’ 1920 Western Golf Association Amateur Medal.

The auction’s top Walter Hagen lot, his 1925 PGA Championship Gold Medal, (one of the 11 majors he won in his storied career) sold for an astounding $62,738 and came with a story that is worthy of the great champion’s reputation.

Other Hagen treasures in the auction included his 1916 Shawnee Open Winner's Gold Medal, 1916 Metropolitan Open Championship Gold Medal, 1920 Metropolitan Championship Gold Medal and Hagen’s 1929 British Open Championship winning and Ryder Cup used golf bag, one of the most extraordinary Golden Age golfing artifacts to ever surface.

One of the auction’s most extraordinary and rarest collectibles was a circa 1790 massive Bunker Iron, which sold for $15,535. It’s very existence was a testament to the enduring quality of the club’s craftsmanship and the extraordinary history of the game of golf.

“Because clubs like this one were specially made by a blacksmith, they were quite expensive and few were made in the earliest days of golf,” said Gutierrez. “For this reason very few remain today, with approximately 70-75 in existence today dating prior to 1830, the majority of which are primarily owned by old Scottish or British golfing clubs, or else reside in golf museums, making this an incredible opportunity for a smart collector.”

Other notable items in the auction were a 1910s-20s Francis Ouimet Tournament Used Putter, Bobby Locke’s 1952 British Open Gold Championship Medal and an array of great material ranging from memorabilia belonging to Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, along with gold medals from Paul Runyon, Jess Sweetser, Bobby Jones’ personal photograph album from his estate, rare 19th century golf balls and extremely collectible golf porcelains and sterling silver awards.

Hickory Golf U.S. Open Underway

July 11th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia, Uncategorized No Comments »

French Lick Resort is transported back to the golden age of golf this week as the historic resort destination in southern Indiana hosts the largest field ever for the U.S. Hickory Open Championship.  The U.S. Hickory Open, which is run by the Society of Hickory Golfers, will be held on the resort’s historic Donald Ross course. Golfers will be transported back in time to a day when the game was first brought to America in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s including the era when the Donald Ross course was created at French Lick Resort in 1917.

The event this year will be the largest ever, as 81 hickory golfers from 27 states, as well as Canada and Australia are entered. In addition, two women will join the field including Mary Ellen Harkins from Morgantown, North Carolina, and Claudia Aaron from Atlanta, Georgia. Alan Grieve from Queensland Australia will travel the furthest for the competition.

“Having the largest field ever coming to French Lick Resort is a testament to the growing popularity of hickory clubs across the country”, said Chris Deinlein, President of the Society of Hickory Golfers. “We are also excited to have two women join the field as well as players from Canada and Australia.”

Golfers participating in the Hickory Open are also encouraged to look the part, with knickers, plus fours, dress shirts and ties straight from the 19th century. Together with old-fashioned hickory-shafted golf clubs, this event will truly be like going back in time.

Matt Dodd's, a marketing executive, has been a passionate hickory golfer since 2003. He noticed that many of the country’s classic courses were being rendered obsolete due to the modern equipment and began playing hickory clubs as a way to have a deeper bond with the game.

“Playing hickory clubs is very liberating and special, especially when playing the old classics like a Donald Ross links-style layouts”, said Dodd's. “These courses really come alive when you're playing with hickories as they were laid out for hickories. Very fair in that the course opens up to give you great opportunities when you come in on the intended line of play, yet highly punitive when you don't. No gimmicks or forced carries. The set up at French Lick for the United States Hickory Open is ideal in this sense.”

French Lick Resort, situated among the rolling hills of the Hoosier National Forest, is the perfect site for such a historic event. Since the early 1900’s, golf has been an integral part of this resort area. Tom Bendelow designed the first course here in 1907 followed by the great Donald Ross ten years later.

The historic Donald Ross course underwent a recent $4.6 million restoration project that has brought the course back to Ross’s original plans. The Ross course brings a rich history to the French Lick Resort. The course was site of the 1924 PGA Championship won by the legendary Walter Hagen and hosted other golf greats and celebrities such as Gene Sarazen, Chick Evans, and Bing Crosby.

New Golf Sculpture Series Starts With Nicklaus

June 17th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

The first in a series of limited-edition, life-cast bronze hand sculptures of golf's living legends teeing up a golf ball has hit the market.  Artist Jack Kimmich of JHK and Company is introducing the series, which launches with World Golf Hall of Fame member Jack Nicklaus.

Licensed by the PGA TOUR and the World Golf Hall of Fame, this unique series of bronze art will be produced from a casting of the actual hand of one of golf's legendary figures. Each piece will be made in the United States in museum-quality art bronze employing the "lost wax" process -- used by artists for more than 2,000 years to hand-craft high-quality bronze art pieces. The casting will be presented on a base of black granite to complete the truly exquisite work of fine art.

A new edition featuring a Hall of Fame member will be introduced periodically, and a casting of each of the legends will be placed on permanent display in the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum in St. Augustine, Fla. Only 1,500 pieces of this first edition in the series of collectibles will be cast.

The castings of the Jack Nicklaus edition and each future edition will be sequentially numbered with the year of issue and signature of the legend engraved into the bronze sculpture itself. A Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Kimmich, with the name of the original purchaser and the raised corporate seal of JHK and Company, will accompany each piece. Patrons of Hand of a Legend will be notified each year in advance of the public offering of each new edition, to provide them the opportunity to reserve the same edition number each year -- completing the list of items of authenticity necessary to make the Hand of a Legend series a truly compelling offering for collectors of golf memorabilia.

"This is such a unique piece of golf history and to be able to create a fine art piece such as this while supporting the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation and the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum is particularly gratifying," Kimmich said.

Patrons acquiring this unique art piece/golf collectible recognizing Nicklaus will also be helping two very worthy institutions -- the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting the health, safety and well-being of children, and the World Golf Hall of Fame, which preserves the history and legacies of golf's greats.

"Jack and his team have done a beautiful job with this piece," Nicklaus said. "The fine details and craftsmanship are outstanding, and it's very obvious that they have poured a great deal of time and themselves into this project. I am honored and humbled that the artist and the World Golf Hall of Fame chose me to launch this series. I am even more honored that they have dedicated proceeds to the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation. It's ironic that the true hand in this project is the helping hand they are providing young boys and girls, as well as their families, who are in need of pediatric health-care services."

"This is a unique product that we are honored to feature in the World Golf Hall of Fame," said Jack Peter, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the World Golf Hall of Fame. "This piece of art will enhance the experience for our guests in the Museum, as well as continue our mission of celebrating the legacies of the game's greatest players."

Hand of a Legend castings will be announced as available on a first-come, first-served basis, and the opportunity to own this "piece of history" is truly limited by the small number of castings to be made. The pieces are now available for ordering at $2,035 each, including shipping within the continental U.S.  Go to www.JHKandCompany.com to learn more about purchasing Hand of a Legend.

Antique Golf Balls: A Collector’s Primer

February 15th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

There are several types of golf balls that were around long before the standard ball we use today. Collectors can look for any number of antique golf balls such as the following:

Wooden Balls – The very first golf balls were, like the clubs players used, made of wood. Not much information is known about these balls, but there are records of golfers using them. While there are written records of these balls being used, there haven’t been many, if any, ever recovered. It’s hard to imagine getting much distance with a wooden ball hit by a wooden club, so it’s easy to see why these balls didn’t last too long. Collecting this type of ball is virtually impossible.

Feather Balls – In the 1600s, a new type of ball was introduced – the feather ball. This ball, as you can imagine, was a lot closer to the type of ball used today. This ball had a leather exterior with feathers packed inside of it. When stuffed into the ball, the feathers were wet, and when they dried, the ball became hard. These balls were produced by a variety of manufacturers including. While examples of feather balls exist, most of the ones recovered have been from later years. Generally the oldest type of ball collected, these can sell for thousands of dollars at auctions.

Gutty Balls – It took about 200 more years to pass by until the next ball was introduced. This ball was made from rubbery-type sap from a tropical tree. The sap, when warmed, could be formed into a sphere, forming the golf ball. These balls had a pattern on them like today’s do, but the dimples were facing outward instead of going into the ball. These balls are far easier to find and because there were several different types of these balls, the price of one can greatly vary. Still these can be found from under $100.00 to several hundred dollars.

Rubber Core or Mesh Balls – The Gutty also played a role in the next ball being introduced, the rubber core ball. These balls were developed by Coburn Haskell and had a hard rubber wrapped inside of a gutty ball. With the hard rubber in the middle, balls started flying and gave golfers a greater distance. In the early 1900s, manufacturers began making these balls with the famous dimple pattern that we see today. Many mesh balls can be found for under $100.00, while spectacular examples or those made by certain manufacturers can sell for more than that.

Two Piece Ball – Finally, in 1972, we saw the golf ball that we use today, the two piece ball. This ball, as implied by its name, is made of two distinct pieces – the dimple-patterned exterior and the hard rubber inside.

When it comes to collecting these types of balls, standard rules generally apply – the older, the more expensive.  Where can you find them?  Actually every day eBay has thousands of antique balls, clubs and other items up for bid, ranging in price from a dollar or two to tens of thousands.  That's one of the best things about collecting antique golf balls and other items:  there are entry points for collectors of every budget.

Five Golf Autographs Worth Owning

February 9th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

If you’re a collector or would like to build a small, but important collection of golf autographs, here are five players who would be considered must-haves.

Tiger Woods – When it comes to collecting golf autographs, it all starts with Tiger. Widely respected as the best player in the game today, he may be the best of all-time. He has 14 career majors and despite not winning any in 2010, still has a great chance at surpassing Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record of 18. Tiger is the top earning money winner and also a savvy businessman. He knows the value of his autographs and is known as a ‘tough get’ because he doesn’t sign as much as other golfers. Because Tiger rarely signs and his autographs are so popular, they are also widely forged. For this reason, if you are unable to get an item signed in-person by Woods, you should take extreme caution when buying an autographed item from a third-party. Click here for certified Tiger autographs on eBay.

Arnold Palmer – Palmer was perhaps the most popular golfer of his era and when he shows up at tournaments, he’s still one of golf’s most beloved figures. He doesn’t have the track record at majors of Woods or Jack Nicklaus, but his seven titles are still more than most players. Palmer is a Hall of Famer and has had almost as much success off the golf course than on it. His career was at its peak in the 1950s and 1960s and was one of the sport’s first stars on television. Palmer happily signs and also autographs a large number of items for his charity and business ventures.  Click here for Palmer signed items.

Jack Nicklaus – Nicklaus may be the best golfer of all-time as evidenced by his 18 career majors. He didn’t just break Bobby Jones’ record of 13, he shattered it and until Woods came along, there’s been little argument that he was golf’s best player. Nicklaus, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, didn’t just win majors – he won in general, as evidenced by his 115 career wins.  Click here for certified Nicklaus items up for auction or sale.

Babe Didrickson Zaharias – Golf was only one sport played by Zaharias and she is regarded as perhaps the greatest female athlete of all-time. Zaharias was an excellent baseball, basketball, and track and field star, but golf may have been her most dominant sport. She won ten career LPGA majors and nearly 50 golf tournaments. Now deceased, her autographs are scarce. Add in the fact that she is often depicted on photos as a track and field star and her golf-related autographs are even more difficult to obtain.

Bobby Jones – Jones is the Babe Ruth of golf autographs. With 13 majors, Bobby Jones held the record for major golf championships until Jack Nicklaus broke it many years later. But the unique thing about Jones was not that he won so many, it’s how he won them. Jones won his 13 major titles while retiring before the age of 30 partially due to health reasons.

Consider that he won all four of golf’s major titles in 1930 and then retired following that year and you have the definition of ‘going out on top.’ Had he been able to play competitively into his 40s like Nicklaus and he could still be the all-time leader in majors. As you’d expect, his autographs aren’t inexpensive. Pricing for balls is scarce and you won't find many on eBay because golf autographs weren’t widely signed at the time, but a signed photograph generally sells for thousands of dollars.

Golf Auctions

February 8th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Several online auction websites had some extraordinary golf auctions featuring a wide range of memorabilia sold on their sites over the past few months.

The Golf Auction (www.thegolfauction.com) recently had approximately 350 golf-related items sold in its Fall auction, which ended in November 2010. As always, there were several interesting pieces, but one thing that bidders had their eyes on were tournament-used flags from golf courses where Jack Nicklaus won several of his majors. A unique thing about these flags was that they were from the 18th hole on each course.

The flag that commanded the highest amount of money was the 18th hole flag from the 1980 U.S. Open, which was the tournament in which Nicklaus won his 16th major. The flag was also autographed by Nicklaus and sold for a whopping $11,350. Other Nicklaus flags available included the 18th hole flag from his 17th major win – the 1980 PGA Championship (sold for $4,372) and the 18th hole flag from his 14th major win – the 1975 PGA Championship (sold for $3,612). Several other flags from non-major tournaments in which Nicklaus won were also available for auction and sold for hundreds of dollars. All flags offered were signed by Nicklaus.

Green Jacket Auctions (www.greenjacketauctions.com) had more than 250 total golf lots available in their most recent online auction. Some of the highlights from the auction were several Tiger Woods tournament worn items including shirts, a hat, and a glove. All of the items were authenticated by Upper Deck and each item was also signed by Tiger.

The shirt bringing the most amount of money was a shirt in which he wore at the Australian Masters tournament, which he won. The shirt was the last tournament Woods has won and was used the tournament, which was only a short time before the now infamous car crash and ensuing fidelity issues. The shirt had a final price of $6,391, but was not sold as the reserve was not met. Another tournament-used shirt (the tournament was not specified, however) sold for $3,968.

Another unique item from the auction was an original 1970s green jacket from an Augusta Country Club member. Few of these jackets make it into the public for sale and this one sold for $16,182, making it the highest lot in the auction.

Not to be outdone is the site most familiar to collectors--eBay --which is fast becoming a premier place for elite collectibles, had an incredible item auctioned on its site in January. A truly rare golf-related item, Glotta, a small pamphlet poem by Stuart Arbuckle printed in 1721, is considered to be one of the earliest writings about golf. The item sold for an incredible $50,400.  eBay is the easiest venue to find golf-related memorabilia and you won't pay a buyer's premium like you would on other sites.

Golf Memorabilia: What to Collect

February 5th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Fans can collect a wide variety of golf memorabilia and as the sport has become more popular, more items have become desired.

Trading cards– Golf trading cards, while issued previously, didn’t start becoming really popular until the 1990s with the printing of Pro Set brand cards. Since then, others gotten on the bandwagon. Upper Deck may be the largest mainstream manufacturer of golf cards and in addition to base cards, the company issues cards with game-used pieces of clothing and autographed cards.  Of course, Donruss did golf cards in 1981 and '82 and there were several sets featuring famous golfers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Players like Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen were in some multi-sport sets like the Goudey Sport Kings and American Caramel sets of the 1930s.

Golf balls – Balls are small enough to store conveniently and some collectors choose to display them in a wall display case. Fans can collect "game-used" balls that are used by golfers in tournaments or standard non-used balls with autographs on them. Many golfers are happy to autograph balls at a practice range or before or after their round in a tournament.

Photographs – Photos are collected in any sport and a framed picture can add significantly to a game room or office. The most popular photos are usually color and glossy and are perfect for autographs. And with the technological advances of digital cameras, you can even take good shots at tournaments (not during a backswing, of course) and have them blown up to the desired size. High-quality cameras will allow you to take photos that can be printed on 16X20 size stock, or sometimes larger.

Gloves – Many times after a tournament, a player will give his gloves away to fans. These gloves can make for nice collectibles and can be left unsigned or autographed by the specific player.

Hats – Similar to gloves, players will also sometimes offer up their hats or toss them into the gallery after a round. While you might not be crazy about wearing a hat stained by sweat from a golfer, they can make for nice collectibles. Want an autographed hat? Take a hat down to the roped-off areas after a tournament where players generally will sign autographs. You can even make it a bit more authentic by doing some research and having a hat with the player’s official sponsor logo. He or she may be even more willing to sign it.

Clubs – For obvious reasons, most players are not quick to give away golf clubs. They get used to them and, especially when successful, will rarely part with them. But if you catch a player near the end of a season who has a club that is particularly worn and not brought about a lot of success, you might get a break. You also can occasionally find game-used clubs up for auction online. Clubs can be kind of difficult to sign, but if you want to have a club autographed, the best part of the club is generally on the face.

Golf Memorabilia and How to Display It

February 4th, 2011 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Collecting golf memorabilia can be fun and with the internet, fairly easy. There are several different ways to display golf memorabilia . Knowing what you’ve got and what you need is the key to having a collection worthy of showing off or just enjoying.

Trading Cards

Cards are smaller items and while they may not make for the best displays, there are ways you can make them easy for viewing. The most common way to display golf trading cards is by using three-ring binders and nine-card plastic sheets.

Fans can collect unused logo balls from different courses, balls used by golfers in tournaments, antique golf balls or even autographed golf balls.

You can also chase antique clubs, such as the antiques used in hickory golf.

There are other ways to display golf memorabilia, of course, but the sports memorabilia display business offers a number of options to get you started.  One site that offers a variety of display cases, signed items and other sports collectible-related products is ProSportsMemorabilia.com and here's another story about display cases for sports memorabilia.

Signed Photo to Injured Ben Hogan a Piece of Golf History

April 8th, 2010 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

A little piece of Masters history has emerged that serves as a reminder that no one player, no matter how great their skill or big their transgression, is greater than the collective history of the sport.

A moving tribute to Ben Hogan, delivered to the legendary golfer on the eve of the 1949 Masters soon after his near-fatal automobile accident, in the form of an autographed photo signed by 97 golfers, including 10 of the first 11 Masters champions, as well as writers, employees and masters Chairman Clifford Roberts, presented as part of Heritage Auctions April 23 Signature Sports Memorabilia auction.

Two months prior to the start of the 1949 Masters, Hogan was involved in a devastating head-on collision with a Greyhound bus on a fog-veiled bridge near Van Horn, Texas. His pelvis, collarbone and ankle were shattered, internal bleeding formed life-threatening clots and damage to his left eye shrouded his vision. Doctors were uncertain if Hogan would ever walk again; none, however, doubted that his golf career had been ended.

“This signed photograph was a ‘get well card’ from the entire professional golf community,” Heritage Auction Director Chris Ivy said, “with an inscription that begins, ‘To Our Friend Ben Hogan, on the eve of the 1949 Masters Tournament we send you heartfelt good wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.’”

Highlights of some of the 97 autographs on the card include some of the most iconic names in the sport’s history, with Bobby Jones, Horton Smith, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Claude Harmon and Sam Snead among the signers the most important signers.

The signed photo was consigned by Douglas McGrath, an employee of Hogan’s. The great golfer gifted the signed photo to McGrath during his time of employment, and it has remained in McGrath’s private collection ever since. This marks the first time that this amazing piece will be offered to the public.

“Clearly this photo was treasured by Hogan, and served as partial inspiration for his miraculous recovery and return to greatness on the links,” said Ivy. “Perhaps more importantly, today it serves as an inspiring reminder of what makes The Masters, and the game of golf, one of the most important and timeless of all sporting events.”

Tiger Woods Signature: Upper Deck Rolls Out New Items

April 7th, 2010 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Upper Deck Company, one of the few that stood behind the world's most famous golfer, will offer a series of new Tiger Woods signature items as Woods returns from what UD is calling "a 144-day hiatus"...as a strange new Nike commercial featuring Tiger and his late father hits the air.

To coincide with Tiger’s quest for a fifth green jacket from Augusta, Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA) – the company's memorabilia division--will unveil new autographed items , many of which commemorate this week’s arrival of the four-time Masters champion.

“We’re extremely excited to showcase these five latest products celebrating Tiger’s return to the PGA Tour,” said Richard McWilliam, Upper Deck’s CEO and Founder. “We wish him well this week as we’ve put together some pretty compelling items that we’re confident collectors will no doubt cherish for years to come.”

Woods has served as an exclusive autograph signer for UDA since 2001 and remains one of Upper Deck’s best-selling athletes of all-time. The five new Tiger Woods signature that will be going on sale shortly include: 1.) Curved Display Case with Range-Driven Golf Ball and Autograph Label (limited to 50), $699.99; 2.) Curved Display Case with Range-Driven Golf Ball and Unsigned Photo (limited to 50), $199.99; 3.) Autographed Black TW Tour Flex Cap, same style worn by Tiger (limited to 100), $999.99; 4.) Autographed Air Zoom TW 2010 Golf Cleats, Black/Gunmetal, Size 11 (limited to 50), $1,399.99; and 5.) Autographed Carmine Dri-Fit Polo Shirt (limited to 100), $1,799.99.

Nike unveiled a new TV ad featuring a static image of Tiger staring into the camera while edited clips of his late father Earl play.  In the video released on You Tube, Earl Woods appears to be asking Woods about his sex scandal.  It's a little like a Saturday Night Live skit about weird TV shows.

Old Tom Morris, Bobby Jones Autographs Part of Auction

February 18th, 2010 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia Comments Off

Bobby Jones autographed photo

Bobby Jones autographed photo

The check that “Old Tom” Morris used to purchase the building and shop on Links Road in St. Andrews, the ancestral home of golf is part of a grouping of golf autographs up for bid in a sports memorabilia auction scheduled for April.

The Mark Emerson collection includes every Hall of Fame golfer except “Young Tom” Morris – of whom there are no known surviving signatures.

The check with “Old Tom’s” signature is one of very few known copies of the legendary golfer’s autograph. It is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.  This exact item, a check for 800 pounds, gave him outright title to the building and shop on Links Road in St. Andrews that bears his name to this day.

Also in the auction is an exceptionally high quality signed Bobby Jones photo from the 1920s.

“An autographed photo of this caliber is entirely appropriate of Jones, America’s most beloved golfer and the winner of an astonishing 13 majors in eight years, between 1923 and 1930,” said Mike Gutierrez of Heritage Auctions. “This is a special relic relating to possibly the most timeless name in all of American golf.”

Another important American golfing icon, Walter Hagen, is equally well-represented in the Heritage Auctions April Sports Memorabilia sale, with 1924 signed letter, written on Royal Liverpool stationery with a full fountain pen signature. The spectacular content belies the bravado of the new British Open Champion. It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

"On behalf of Mrs. Hagen and myself,” he wrote, “I thank British golfers for the great and cordial reception and many kindnesses we have received while with you to play in the Open Championship. I did not come to win it but to try for it and to enjoy the sportsmanship and friendship which has always been extended in such abundance. With my fellow countrymen I look to the Little Island as the home of golf and it is always a joy to play amongst you. I shall try to come next year and defend the title I am so proud to win. Sincerely yours, (signed) Walter Hagen."

British golf fans who know their history beyond “Old Tom” and “Young Tom” Morris will be intrigued by the inclusion of an exceedingly are 1865 Andrew Strath handwritten and signed wage receipt, possibly the only Strath signature in existence, estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

Strath became the "Keeper of the Greens" at Prestwick in 1865, following “Old Tom” Morris's resignation and move to St. Andrews, and promptly won the Open Championship at his new home course. He was a brilliant player in golf's infancy with four other top four finishes in the Open. Sadly he died of tuberculosis in 1868, making this signed and dated receipt for wages the rarest of the rare in major golf championship memorabilia. Remarkably, his unmarked grave was recently discovered and now a commemorative plaque identifies the forgotten Champion.

The auction takes place April 22-23.  Further highlights of the collection include, but are not limited to:

1918 Johnny McDermott Signed Photograph: In 1911, Johnny McDermott became the first American-born player to win the National Golf Championship and, to this day, McDermott is the youngest US Open Champion of all time at age 19. All previous US Open winners (1895-1910) had been born in the U.K. In 1912, McDermott won again, but shortly after being rescued from a ship accident in 1914, McDermott blacked out at his host club in Atlantic City and he spent the balance of his life in mental hospitals. This is an extremely rare and significant piece, the only known signed photo of McDermott known to exist. Estimate: $2,000-$4,000.

1894 A.F. MacFie Signed Scorecard: The first British Amateur Championship was held in 1885 at Hoylake and was won by MacFie. Nine years later, young Freddie Tait, who himself would win the Amateur twice (in 1896 and 1898) played a challenge match at The Old Course against “Old Tom” Morris and shot a then course record 72. In Tait's own hand, he wrote down his scores on this sheet and had it attested by none other than A. F. MacFie. This is the only known signature of the first British Amateur Champion. Estimate: $3,000-$5,000.

1888 John Ball, Jr. Handwritten Signed Letter: John Ball Jr. is the most prolific winner of amateur titles in the history of golf. From 1888-1912 he captured the British Amateur Championship no less than eight times and in 1890 he won the Open Championship. Estimate: $3,000-$5,000.

Circa 1920 Harold H. Hilton Signed Photograph: Harold Hilton had an extremely distinguished career, winning the British Amateur title four times from 1900 to 1913. In that span he also won a US Amateur, in 1911 at Apawamis. If that wasn't enough, he also won two Open Championships as an amateur--in 1892 at Muirfield and in 1897 at Hoylake. This is an original Sport & General Press Agency photo on original studio mount, signed boldly by the seven time major Champ. Very rare. Image size is 6 x 8, with mount expanding the final dimensions to 8 x 10.5. The signature rates an impressive 8/10. Estimate: $2,000-$4,000.

1937 Jim Barnes Signed Photograph: "Long Jim" Barnes was one of golf's early stars, winning the very first U.S. PGA Golf Championship in 1916 at Siwanoy. After a two year hiatus for World War I, he won again in 1919, and in 1921 he added the US Open title to his credit with President Warren Harding there in person to present the trophy. His final major championship win came when Prestwick hosted its last British Open in 1925. Estimate: $2,000-$4,000.

Golf Art Can Be Your Golf Collecting Focus

November 26th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

While some sports seem a little stagnant in terms of growth in the collectible market, golf continues to grow at a steady pace. The simple and quiet sport has motivated a lot of people to do just more than tee it up. Collecting golf memorabilia can range from antique clubs and balls to signed trading cards pulled from packs in recent years. Some golf collectors see their stash as art.

One way of preserving the rich history and progress of a sport such as golf is to actually paint out visuals that can tell its stories as well as that of the people behind its success. This is why golf art is enjoying popularity in the ranks of golf collectibles. The person having such in his grasp can truly feel the passion within every picture displayed. Tiger Woods has been the focus of more golf art in his relatively short career than perhaps any player in history.

A golf gallery can be produced using the traditional golf collectibles of clubs and balls. These items can then be paired up with elegant and antique golf photos of both tournament highlights and the courses on which sport is played. There can also be prints of players in their most intense features or simply during their humane times of smiles and laughter. Enthusiasts have the privilege to put up a stage wherein the game becomes alive. This can be spiced up and brought to a notch higher by adding golf murals and designs that will perfectly slate the person’s golfing identity.

When Babe Ruth, Bob Hope and and Bing Crosby Hit the Links

September 22nd, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

It’s a piece of Americana that appeals to golf memorabilia collectors, baseball collectors and those who collect entertainment items.  A golf scorecard from a star-studded foursome goes on the auction block next week.

Babe Ruth, Bob Hope, Big Grosby and then-California governor Culbert Olson apparently got together in Sacramento to play for charity on March 1, 1942.  Charles Robertson, a member of the Sacramento Municipal Golf Course, followed them   that day and secured autographs of all four on the scorecard. The autographs are signed in pencil   that was kept by Robertson and then his heirs the past 67 years.

“My grandfather was an avid golfer, but we didn’t know he still had this autographed scorecard until we were going through his possessions after he passed away in 1993 at the age of 72.  It was a surprise to find it,” said Steve Hansen of Sacramento, who consigned the scorecard on behalf of his family.    “The match play tournament scorecard only goes through the 16th hole.  Hope and Crosby apparently had won at that point, and left to catch a flight to attend a charity dinner elsewhere that evening,” explained Hansen, who said he inherited his enjoyment of golf from his grandfather and father.

The auction concludes October 1.

Lawsuit over Lost Tiger Woods Autographs

August 9th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

The owner of a golf memorabilia auction house is suing the company that has an exclusive paid autograph contract with Tiger Woods.

Robert Zafian, co-owner of Green Jacket Auctions in New Jersey, claims he mailed six pin flags that were used in previous Masters tournaments to the Upper Deck Company in California,  but now the company says it doesn't know what happened to them.   Woods was supposed  to autograph the flags at a price of $800 each.  It's a practice Zafian has done before but this time, the six flags never made it back to him.

He's now suing Upper Deck for $40,000, which is the value of the flags when autographed according to his attorney.

Zafian's attorney claims UDA Authenticated emailed Green Jacket auctions in April, two months after they were shipped to California, and said Woods had completed the signing.

Zafian's credit card was charged for $4700 (he got a $100 break on the price), but the charge has recently been reversed and Upper Deck has offered only a $200 payment per flag.

Upper Deck and Zafian discussed options for several weeks after it admitted the flags were lost, but nothing happened.

Woods signed a number of items during the private session, many of which are now being sold at  The Upper Deck Store.

Ballad of the 2001 SP Authentic Tiger Woods

July 5th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

It's not really his "rookie" card since Tiger Woods had already been playing on the Tour for 5 years when  the 2001 Upper Deck SP Authentic golf cards came out, but it was UD's first swing at the sport. Owning the rights to market Tiger Woods autographs didn't hurt Upper Deck's position in the market, either.

Now, the 2001 SP Authentic Tiger autographed card seems to be the gold standard online. Prices have dropped a bit from the pre-knee surgery days, but they're still pricey. A PSA 10 SP Authentic Woods autographed card recently sold for $4000 on eBay. The same card was selling quite a bit higher last year. A PSA 9 went for $2885 and a BGS 9 for $2650, leaving the obvious impression that the 'gem mint' cards are being purchased strictly for their investment potential as the ultra-rare best of the best. In fact, it's likely those who are buying the '9's are also sticking them away in hopes of selling just after whatever milestone Tiger reaches next.

Average collectors can find them for less than $2000 ungraded or in lower professional grades. It's the autograph, of course, that drives the price up. It's not enough anymore to collect 'rookie cards' unless they're autographed. At least that's the mentality of the modern era collector. Kind of sad, but you have to admit the cards are pretty sharp.

Kind of surprising to see over 2400 golf trading cards on eBay right now.

U.S. Open Scorecards Become Golf Collectors Items

July 4th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia, PGA Tour No Comments »

Ever check the bid leaderboard outside the clubhouse? No matter if it's a major PGA Tour event or your club championship, you can see scores posted hole-by-hole, round-by-round when volunteers get out their magic markers and posterboard.

At this year's U.S. Open, they became golf memorabilia. The individual player sheets and round-by-round leaderboards were sold in a fundraising auction for the Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation and the Long Island Caddie Scholarship Fund.

Two of the scorecard strips sold for over $1000. The line chronicling champion Lucas Glover's tournament brought $2510. Tiger Woods' scoresheets sold for $1125, while the numbers for Phil Mickelson brought $550. For those seeking something unique, it was sort of a bargain. Many of the cards for players familiar to golf fans were purchased for $150 or less and some didn't sell at all. The auction sort of flew under the radar, with only CNBC's blog giving it much attention.

Here are the U.S. Open scoreboard auction results.

Tiger Woods’ 2008 US Open Shirts for Sale

June 15th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

One of Tiger Woods' top sponsors, the Upper Deck Company, is offering three of his golf shirts from last year's U.S. Open win.

It's the latest piece in the "athlete worn" genre that has attracted collectors looking for something a little more unique than your average trading card.

The company had Woods in for an autograph session recently, in which Tiger put his name and notation on the front of each shirt in black magic marker.  No word on whether they've been washed.

Woods has been an Upper Deck client since 2000, autographing a variety of memorabilia which is eventually sold at the UpperDeckStore.com.

The shirts are priced at...get this...$30-50,000 each.  It's a boatload of cash, but autographed, game-worn jerseys from the likes of Michael Jordan, LeBron James and other superstars can fetch $20-30,000.  Regular Woods autographs on Upper Deck's line of flags, photos and the like, are usually much less pricey.

Here's video from Upper Deck's shirt-signing session with Tiger, who got into contention for the epic battle with Rocco Mediate while wearing the shirts in June of 2008.

Tiger Woods autographed cards in…hockey set?

April 1st, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

The timing couldn't be better for Upper Deck.  On the heels of Tiger Woods' first win of 2008, the company secured some fresh autographed trading cards for it's upcoming products, including a special hockey set that includes a number of cards decidedly...not hockey.

Upper Deck's Chris Carlin: "We recently had a signing with Tiger Woods and received back a limited amount of the 2008-09 NHL Champ’s mini-signature cards.  They packed out as exchange cards, but we will begin fulfilling any requests received for them next week.  It will be interesting to see how activity goes on a smaller card like this of Tiger.  He signed four different versions with brown, purple, blue and black backs.  Each of the cards is VERY limited."

Woods has an exclusive arrangement with Upper Deck.  Champs hockey singles, including at least one Tiger autographed card, are already showing up on eBay.

Golf Memorabilia Auction Digs into Ball Bag

March 14th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

I'm a sucker for vintage sports memorabilia and if you're into the history of the game, you'll drool over some of the stuff that Bonham's is offering this month.

The British auction house has over 300 lots of vintage and fairly modern golf collectibles up for bid.  There are all sorts of very old golf balls and clubs.  Some of the balls are still in unopened form.

They've also got a ton of stuff from the British Open dating back decades.  Programs, autographed golf flags, etc.  Ryder Cup memorabilia, Willis and Churchmans golf trading cards from the 1930s and before.

Golf memorabilia continues to grow.  It's not along the lines of baseball or even football memorabilia here in the States, but there are passionate golf collectors all over the world who chase items with the same fervor as their stick and ball collecting counterparts.

We still recommend shopping via eBay because you can find a lot of the same type of material if you're patient AND because I can't figure out exactly how much a British pound is in American currency  but...it's all a lot of fun to look at.

Chasing Tiger autographs

1997 Masters badge signed by Tiger Woods

1997 Masters badge signed by Tiger Woods

You know who is playing his first stroke play event of 2009 which means everyone at Doral was chasing down a Tiger Woods autograph---and probably not getting one.

We’re not saying Tiger never signs at the course—he’s been known to sign a few while walking when not in competition.  But you’ve got to be very lucky.

If you were smart, you started following him when he was just getting started on tour.  He was already well-known but until the 1997 Masters, he wasn’t impossible.

Iconic Memorabilias current auction includes  a 1997 Masters badge with a very clean Tiger autograph on it.  Its pretty symbolic of Tigers career and with unsigned Masters badges from that tournament in demand, this one should generate a lot of interest.  They also have some other golf memorabilia, including a few other Tiger autographs.

We suspect there were be a lot of other players signing this week too.  Tiger sort of has that trickle down effect.

Tiger Woods Rookie Cards

February 14th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

Born in 1975, many of us can remember seeing footage of a young Tiger Woods hitting a golf ball at the young age of two.Right away it was clear that Tiger would grow up to be an incredible golfer since he just had a gift for the game.  At just 15 years of age, Tiger was the youngest person to ever win the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and several other awards followed. Now, he's the king of golf trading cards.

Making his way into PGA, Woods joined the tour in 1996 and was soon offered large endorsements from such notable companies like Nike and Titleist for a total of $20 million just that first year alone. It was during this first year that sports card manufacturers raced to enter the market with a Tiger Woods rookie card knowing that it would easily sell out in no time.

Of all the different Tiger Woods Rookie cards that exist, all made by different companies, a few stand out as being the most valuable and sought after by collectors.Sports Illustrated for Kids offered a card for sale in their magazines in 1996 which has become a hot commodity among golf card collectors, with one such card fetching $125,000 recently. What's interesting about this particTiger Woods rookie card Grand Slam Ventures ular Tiger Woods rookie card is that Sports Illustrated never intended for this card to ever be traded as a serious collectible and they have even gone as far as to request grading and authenticating companies not to grade that particular card.

Grand Slam Ventures made one of the other notable rookie cards, adding a Tiger Woods card to the Masters series of cards that it had made for many years.Today those specific cards have varying prices ranging from just $200, but with some sales reported to be as high as $40,000.Two versions of this card were created, one was offered as a 1997-1998 date and the other with a 1997-1999 date, but the earlier one is the most valuable, worth at least twice as much as the later one.

Many feel the 1991 Upper Deck Tiger Woods cards, especially the autographed versions, are his true rookie card since the company was the first mainstream trading card manufacturer to issue a card for him.

If you're a golf collector or just a Tiger fan, a Tiger Woods rookie card is certainly a wonderful addition to a collection and may easily become one of your more important pieces are time goes on.

Collecting Vintage Golf Trading Cards

February 10th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

Trading cards have long been one of the most popular collectible items, especially with sports collectors and golf enthusiasts. When these cards were initially released, they were shipped in packs or sets, with each set containing anywhere from 10 to 50 cards. At their time of release in decades past, golf cards were inexpensive and often amateur collectors eventually disposed of them, believing they would have no real value 50 years down the road. It's because of this that some of the older cards are hard to find and therefore demand a higher price. While many of these cards have not hit the high prices like their counterparts in baseball or hockey, vintage golf trading cards Bobby Jones Sport Kings 1933are still a hot collectible that are expected to increase in value in the coming years. Over the past 100 years, professional golf has amassed a very large fan following, which in turn has fueled demand for vintage golf trading cards.

If a golfer from 100 years ago were to travel in time to today, I'm sure they would be surprised to find just how popular golf has become. Because it is a sport that may be more accessible to a large group of people based on age and ability, golf participation has grown to heights not seen by more intensive sports like baseball or hockey. Just like baseball enthusiasts and fans eagerly collect vintage trading cards of their favorite teams and players, avid golfers have turned their love for the game into a collecting old golf trading cards. What I have always found interesting about collecting any vintage golf item is the skill that was displayed by players 50 or 75 years ago. While we have benefited from technology and advancements in equipment, older players used inferior equipment, yet excelled at the game, which showed their level of skill. A vintage trading card will often tell the whole truth regarding their skill on the course and the pre-World War II cards are a great snapshot into the game's colorful past.

Who can forget the golf greats like Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and Walter Hagen? Collecting vintage golf cards of such notable players is a great way to memorialize those who have since passed away, or commemorate retired golfers who made a lasting impact on the game. Whether you choose to collect vintage golf cards as a hobby or a more serious investment, one thing is true; Of all the different trading cards available, golf cards seem to receive the least press but might be the most interesting to collect.

Bobby Jones signed photo tops auction

February 8th, 2009 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

A signed 8x10 photograph of Bobby Jones sold for $5625 in a recent sports memorabilia auction conducted by Maryland-based Huggins & Scott.

While heavy on the traditional baseball, football, basketball and hockey memorabilia and cards, the auctiondid contain some golf material.  The Jones photo drew 28 bids and had a high bid of $5,000.  The buyer's premium pushed the realized price $625 higher.

A lot of three signed Ben Hogan items including a contract and check, brought $881 including the BP, a Masters flag signed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player drew 12 bids and sold for $822, a group of five signed items including Nicklaus, Palmer and Byron Nelson brought just over $500.

Golf Memorabilia Collectors Book

November 30th, 2008 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

While most American sports memorabilia auction houses focus on the four major sports, you will occasionally find some golf items.  Nothing, though, like what you'll find in a couple of the European companies.  Most notably, Bonham's.  Based in Great Britain, they often have some exceptional golf memorabilia.

Bonham's golf specialist, Kevin McGimpsey, has written a very nice book that collectors might want to consider putting on their Christmas list.  Entitled, appropriately enough, "Golf Memorabilia", the book covers 10 chapters and is 220 pages long.

The book is just out--and should provide a valuable reference to collectors around the world.  There really is a shortage of good books on golf memorabilia and a thirst for information that often goes unquenched.  The best information, of course, comes from those who have a lot of knowledge and since he deals with it on a daily basis, McGimpsey is an authority.

There are no less than 360 photographs of golf antiques and collectibles in the book.  It's priced at about $50 US Dollars, which includes the author's signature and dedication as well as all postage costs.  For more information, you can go to craigcampbellart.co.uk.

Bob Hope Auction Has Rare Golf Memorabilia

October 11th, 2008 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

"Collector and museum quality" items from the life, career and estate of the legendary Bob Hope will be sold during a live televised and real-time online auction conducted by Julien's Auctions next weekend.

The auction takes place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Hundreds of items will be sold, but golf collectors remember the entertainer's fondness for the game and will find a number of items for sale.

Highlights from Mr. Hope's golf memorabilia collection include: a complete set of golf clubs from various makers (woods 1 - 6, irons 3 - 9 and a brass head putter); his Dunlop Bogie Buster golf bag; a Tiffany and Company sterling silver golf club given to Mr. Hope for his 95th birthday by NBC; 24k gold plated golf tees; two Chrysler Classic ball markers bearing Mr. Hope's image; a white, pink and blue striped golf shirt; Izod® cardigan sweater; a red sports jacket made by Arthur Cross; a light blue pair of dress pants with "Second Mile Golf Classic" embroidered on the back pocket and his Du Pont Corfam leather golf shoes. "Golf is my real profession, show business pays my green fees" — Bob Hope.

Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Bob and Dolores Hope Charitable Foundation.

Tiger Woods Trading Cards are Hot

March 15th, 2008 admin Posted in Golf Memorabilia No Comments »

The best golfer on the planet seems to be rededicated.

Tiger Woods has won 17 of his last 25 tournaments dating back to the 2006 British Open. He's won five straight and is 4-0 so far in 2008.

Woods' 25-foot birdie putt to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational last Sunday was yet another signature moment in a special run. He's drawing sports fans back to their TV sets again as the Masters approaches. It would also seem collectors are waking up to the fact that Tiger is one of those rare athletes that transcends the game. Prices for Woods' autographed trading cards are rising with every victory.

In the last two weeks, a staggering 38 autographed Tiger Woods cards have sold for $1,000 or more. Leading the pack was the March 7 sale of a 2002 Upper Deck SP game used buyback, numbered 3 of 18 which sold for $11,053 in a PSA 9 grade, attracting 52 bids. A 2001 UD eVolve autographed redemption card brought $4733 and 31 bids to the table.

Woods' 2001 SP Authentic 'rookie' card is perhaps the most popular and prevalent autographed card. 900 were issued, and several have been offered in the last couple of weeks. The card has been selling in the $5000-5600 range, although one did sell for $7088.

A BGS 9 graded 2001 SP 'Sign of the Times' insert (25 of 29) sold for $7900 while a 2001 UD Players Ink rookie autograph PSA 10 brought $3,050.

One optimistic seller is currently offering the Sports Illustrated for Kids 1996 card featuring Woods in a PSA 10 grade for $125,000.  There's no doubt Tiger Woods trading cards are among the most valuable ever issued--and he's far from done.
